He explained data privacy and international interference in elections were subjects that they’ve discussed in the Facebook board assembly.

“These are a few of the biggest issues that the business has faced, and we feel a huge responsibility to get these right,” Zuckerberg informed the US the lawmakers during the Congressional hearing, including that “this is one of my top priorities in 2018”.

He explained Facebook was taking measures to ensure the integrity of elections in countries like the United States, India, Brazil, and Pakistan.

“2018 is is an incredibly important year for elections. Not only from the US mid-terms, however, around the world, there are important elections – in India, Brazil, Mexico, Pakistan and Hungary – and we would like to be sure we do everything we can to protect the integrity of these elections,” the Facebook founder and CEO explained.

Zuckerberg began his inaugural hearing because his firm faces charges of failing to prevent Cambridge Analytica, the data-mining firm affiliated with Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, by gathering private information from over 80 million users to try to influence election.

Zuckerberg said his one of the greatest regrets was that Facebook was slow in identifying the Russian information surgeries in 2016.

“We asked them to do lots of conventional cyber attacks, which we did identify and notify the campaigns that they were attempting to hack into them,” he said.

The Facebook CEO stated he was now more convinced as his company has set the things right. Considering that the 2016 election, there have been a number of crucial elections round the world where it’s had a better record, he explained.

There was the French presidential election. There was also the US Senate Alabama particular election last year,” Zuckerberg added.

He said Facebook has deployed new Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools which better identify fake accounts, trying to interfere in elections or spread misinformation.

“Between the three elections, we were able to remove tens of thousands of accounts until they could do major damage,” he explained.

“And the nature of those attacks, though, is that there are individuals in Russia whose occupation is to attempt and exploit our systems and other Internet systems, and other systems, as well. This is an arms race , right? I mean, they’re going to continue getting better in this, and we need to invest in keeping on getting better in this, also, which is the reason among things I said previously is we’re going to have more than 20,000 people, from the end of this calendar year, working on content and security inspection throughout the business,” he said.

Zuckerberg said they’ve developed tools which identify individuals when they attempt to create fake accounts.

Your content has to be authentic. We build technical resources to attempt to identify when people are creating bogus reports, especially large networks of bogus accounts, like the Russians have to be able to remove all this content,” he explained.

The Facebook CEO stated following the US 2016 election, Facebook’s top priority was to protect the integrity of other elections around the planet.

“What we are likely to do would be to ask a valid government identity and we’re likely to verify the location. We’re going to do that so that someone sitting in Russia, for instance, could not say they’re in America and, consequently, able to run an election ad,” he said.
