Apple is working on touchless gesture Management and curved Displays for future iPhones, Jobs that Will help the company differentiate its most-important product in an increasingly crowded Marketplace, according to Individuals Who Have knowledge of the matter.
The controller attribute would allow iPhone users perform some jobs by moving their finger close to the screen without actually tapping it. The technology likely won’t be prepared for consumers to get at least two years, if Apple chooses to proceed with it, a person familiar with the job stated.
Apple has embraced new ways for humans to interact with computers. Apple’s newest iPhones have a characteristic called 3D Touch that reacts differently depending on various finger pressures. The gesture technologies would take into account the proximity of a finger into the display, the person said.
Apple is also growing iPhone screens that curve inward slowly from top to bottom, one of the individuals knowledgeable about the situation said. That’s different than the latest Samsung smartphone displays, which curve down in the edges. Thus far, every iPhone model has used a flat display. The iPhone X’s OLED display curves slightly in the base, but the contour is largely invisible to the human eye.
OLED, or organic light emitting diode, screens can be shaped into curves or perhaps folded, unlike the less-flexible LCD display technology used in prior iPhones. A curved iPhone may be as little as two to three decades away, the person said. Apple can also be focusing on new display technologies, called MicroLED, however, that is at least three to five years away, Bloomberg News reported last month.
Both features are still in the early research and development phase and Apple could choose to go forward with the improvements.
The work comes as the Cupertino, California-based smartphone leader looks to make its own gadgets stand out.
To remain ahead, Apple needs compelling new features and designs. Samsung is currently working on a foldable smartphone, while Huawei is seeing increased achievement in Asia.
Samsung established a feature called Air Gestures several years back that allows users take calls and flip through web pages by waving their hands throughout the cover of the phone. Google’s ATAP research team was working on similar technology through a program known as Project Soli. Apple’s design would require gestures to be closer to the screen compared to Project Soli, the individual familiar with the situation said. The attribute would be determined by technology built into the display itself instead of via a motion sensor on the phone’s bezel, like with Samsung’s implementation, the person explained.
While the Apple projects aren’t imminent, the company has near-term plans to enlarge OLED technology to more devices, in accordance with others knowledgeable about the issue. It will release another iPhone with that type of display later this year; a larger model using a 6.5-inch display, up in the 5.8-inch size in the current iPhone X. The business is also working with the upgrade to the iPhone X’s size plus a brand new, lower-cost LCD version.
To access adequate OLED supplies for these new devices, Apple has been expanding its sourcing from Samsung to also include LG Screen, the people said.
